Who was Kartini?

Kartini was born into a noble Javanese family in Jepara, a coastal town in Central Java. She was the fifth child and second eldest daughter of Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, the regent of Jepara. As a child, she received a Dutch education at a local school, where she learned to read and write in Dutch, Malay, and Javanese. She also developed an interest in literature, art, and philosophy.

However, when she turned 12, she had to follow the tradition of pingit, or seclusion, which confined her to her home until she was married. During this period, she was not allowed to go to school or interact with anyone outside her family. She felt isolated and frustrated by the lack of freedom and opportunity for women in her society. She wrote in one of her letters:

"Oh, if only I could have gone on learning and learning, and go on pursuing truth, always searching for it without end."

To cope with her loneliness and boredom, she read books from her father's library, corresponded with her friends and teachers, and cultivated friendships with several Dutch officials and intellectuals. She also learned about the social and political issues affecting Indonesia, which was then under the colonial rule of the Netherlands. She became aware of the oppression and injustice faced by her people, especially women, who were subjected to discrimination, polygamy, forced marriage, and domestic violence.

Kartini dreamed of emancipating women from their traditional roles and empowering them with education and self-reliance. She wrote in another letter:

"I want to be free, free in everything that I do; I want to be able to stand alone; I want to be able to study not religion alone but everything else as well."

She also envisioned a modern and independent Indonesia that would be free from colonial domination and feudalism. She wrote in yet another letter:

"We must not be content with our present lot; we must aspire to something higher; we must not be satisfied with being servants of foreign rulers; we must become their equals."

What is Panggil Aku Kartini Saja?

Panggil Aku Kartini Saja is a biographical work that tells the story of Kartini's life and thoughts through her own words. The book is based on Kartini's letters, which she wrote to her friends and acquaintances between 1899 and 1904. The letters were collected and edited by J.H. Abendanon, the former Minister of Education and Culture of the Dutch East Indies, who published them in 1911 under the title Door Duisternis tot Licht (Out of Darkness into Light). The book was translated into several languages and became a source of inspiration for many Indonesians who fought for independence and women's rights.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who was also a critic of colonialism and a champion of human rights, decided to write his own version of Kartini's biography in 1962. He wanted to present Kartini as a national hero who challenged the status quo and advocated for social change. He also wanted to highlight Kartini's role as a pioneer of Indonesian literature and culture. He wrote in his introduction:

"...Kartini did not have a mass following, let alone money. What Kartini had was sensitivity and concern and she wrote down all her suppressed feelings. And the result was extraordinary, besides elevating Kartini's name, her voice could be heard far away, even to the country of origin and root of all destruction of the Native people..."

Pramoedya divided Kartini's biography into four volumes, each covering a different aspect of her life and work. The first volume, Jepara 25 Mei 1899 (Jepara May 25, 1899), focuses on Kartini's childhood and education, as well as her family and social background. The second volume, Kartini di Bawah Pengawasan (Kartini Under Surveillance), deals with Kartini's seclusion and her correspondence with various people. The third volume, Kartini Menjelang Ajal (Kartini Approaching Death), narrates Kartini's marriage and pregnancy, as well as her death at the age of 25. The fourth volume, Kartini Sesudah Mati (Kartini After Death), explores Kartini's legacy and influence on the Indonesian movement and culture.
